August 11, 2015 marks the first anniversary of the unexpected death of Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams.

(REUTERS) - August 11 marks a year since the death of Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams.

The actor hanged himself in his home in northern California.

His widow Susan Schneider said he was suffering from the early stages of Parkinson's disease and from severe depression.

A year on she, and his three children remain locked in a dispute over his estate.

Williams was one of the world's most beloved and groundbreaking comedians.

Over a long and distinguished career, he starred in a plethora of classic films like Good Morning, Vietnam, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Will Hunting - which earned him an Oscar.

His death sent shockwaves around the world, standing in stark contrast to the many on-screen characters he portrayed who encouraged others to tap into their own inner vitality.

On Tuesday, fans paid homage to the acting great on social media.

A force of manic energy, Williams long ago established himself as a Hollywood legend, and leaves behind a legacy of laughter.
