SINGAPORE - Three years ago, American author Colson Whitehead published one of his generation's landmark novels on slavery, The Underground Railroad.

It would go on to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for fiction, two of America's biggest literary accolades, and earn praise from television mogul Oprah Winfrey and former United States president Barack Obama.
