SINGAPORE - From a grand, cosmopolitan novel on 1930s movie stars to a tragedy set in World War II Singapore, four home-grown authors picked up by major international publishers are releasing novels on the global stage.

In 1928, at a press ball in Berlin, a serendipitous thing happened. A photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt, took a photo of three young actresses: Marlene Dietrich, Anna May Wong and Leni Riefenstahl.
