Introducing Singapore arts to the world

The artistic director and founder of The Necessary Stage, Mr Alvin Tan, recalls the first time his company took a production overseas. The show was playwright Haresh Sharma's Still Building and it was staged in Egypt at the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre in 1992.

The 55-year-old remembers that the small black box theatre was dusty, equipped with a portable cassette recorder instead of proper sound equipment, and "the light design was appalling". But the show attracted full houses and actress Karen Tan won a commendation for her performance.
