Open Call: Singapore Creative Writing Residency 2016

Organised by the National University of Singapore's University Scholars Programme, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and The Arts House, the Singapore Creative Writing Residency 2016 is offering two six-month residencies from August to January. Residents will receive a monthly stipend. All nationalities are welcome. Applications close on Feb 14.

Meet The Celebrity: Chew Chor Meng Of Stages Of Life

Local veteran actor Chew Chor Meng started his career with Mediacorp after winning the talent competition Star Search in 1990. His bilingual book, Stages Of Life, was released last December. Chew, who suffers from spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, will talk about his book during two sessions.

SSO: The Butterfly Lovers

China's first female opera-symphony conductor Zheng Xiao Ying will make her Singapore Symphony Orchestra debut at the Victoria Concert Hall, directing the orchestra in the Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto. Associate concertmaster Kong Zhao Hui will be the soloist.

Balancing The World By Belinda Fox

Huayi 2016 - God Of Carnage

After an overwhelmingly received debut in Hong Kong, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre brings its Cantonese adaptation of French playwright Yasmina Reza's Olivier- and Tony Award-winning play, God Of Carnage, here. The play tells how a playground fight between children leads to a cordial living-room meeting between both sets of parents that turns into an all-out war.

The play by Desmond Sim (Autumn Tomyam, The Swimming Instructor) is about a towkay and his newest wife in post-war Singapore as they negotiate their way through a tumultuous relationship on the eve of Singapore's transformation into a modern nation that will no longer tolerate polygamy. The play draws attention to a little-known aspect of Singapore's history: the advent of the Women's Charter which outlaws polygamy, a move advocated by founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
