Famous paintings on stamps to commemorate opening of Singapore's National Gallery

SINGAPORE -Most of us may not be able to afford a famous painting, but miniature works of art - on stamps - will be made available by Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) when the National Gallery Singapore officially opens to the public on Tuesday ( Nov 24).

SingPost will be issuing a commemorative stamp set featuring four artworks by renowned artists from Singapore and South-east Asia.

The paintings are:

* Drying Salted Fish by Cheong Soo Pieng, a pioneer modern artists from Singapore;

* Pagodas II, Pago-Pago Series by Latiff Mohidin, Malaysia's most celebrated visual artist and poet;

* National Language Class by Chua Mia Tee, a leading realist painter known for his paintings of vanishing Singapore streetscapes; and

* Wounded Lion by Raden Saleh, a pioneering Indonesian Romantic painter.

The stamps will be in denominations of $1.30 each.

There will be a pre-cancelled First Day Cover affixed with stamps ($6.30), a presentation pack ($7.35) and a first-day cover without stamps (35 cents).
