SINGAPORE - On normal days, the Books Kinokuniya branch at Liang Court mall is an oasis of cheerful calm.

Strains of Vivaldi mingle with the tinkle of musical boxes in a glass display. Wandering the store's impeccably ordered shelves, one feels as if one is sinking into a warm bath of fiction and finer feelings.
