SINGAPORE - Like the Taj Mahal in India and Louvre Museum in Paris, the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia's Siem Reap province is one of those iconic destinations synonymous with crowds.

Guidebooks exhort an early start to beat the tour buses. Even so, it used to be nearly impossible to take a photo of the temples without the odd vacationer straying into your frame.
