FLORENCE, Italy – In a small square in Florence, I watch young children crowding around a rather grotesque statue, giggling and posing for photos.

The sculpture depicts a little long-nosed boy whose limbs are deformed – twisted and melted, as if he has been injured in a horrible accident.
