SINGAPORE - As the child of Indian immigrants, my school holidays were often taken up by trips to visit extended family in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

This meant long car trips, idli and thosai for breakfast and dinner every day, pilgrimages to temples, and watching the latest films from movie stars such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth again and again.
