SINGAPORE – Fast fashion retailer Cotton On is reminding customers that it is here to stay by serving matcha drinks on the house at five stores this weekend, following disproven media reports about the chain’s exit from Singapore.
Matcha drink carts will be stationed from April 4 to 5, between 3 and 5pm, at its VivoCity, 313@somerset, Nex, Tampines Mall and Jem outlets, the brand said in a press statement on April 2.
“It’s the brand’s heartfelt thank you to the Singapore community that makes Cotton On part of their everyday style story.”
Local media had on March 30 reported the liquidation of Cotton On Asia, according to a notice published in the Government Gazette on the same date.
The news suggested an end to the Australian company’s operations in Singapore.
On March 31, Cotton On refuted the claim. The entity in the process of voluntary liquidation is an inactive holding company that never operated any stores or employed team members, it said.
“This has no impact on customers, teams, stores, suppliers or operations within the Asia region,” the brand spokesperson had said.
Cotton On Singapore was once the sole subsidiary of Cotton On Asia, but is now under the group’s principal operating company, Cotton On International Pty Ltd.
The move means there is no longer a need for Cotton On Asia as an intermediary company, Cotton On Group’s chief financial officer Michael Hardwick told The Straits Times on March 31.
The group operates the Cotton On, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids brands, as well as stationery brand Typo and shoe brand Rubi here. Other brands in the group include Factorie, Supre and Ceres Life.
Cotton On Group was founded in Geelong, Australia, in 1991 by Mr Nigel Austin. It opened its first store in Singapore at Wisma Atria in 2007, and its Asia headquarters here in 2014 with more than 90 staff.
According to the group’s website, it operates in 20 countries with 20,000 employees.
