SEOUL – South Korean singer-songwriter Wheesung was found dead at his home in Seoul, the police said on March 10.

The 43-year-old’s death came less than a month after South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron, 24, was

at her home in Seoul on Feb 16. Her career had taken a hit following a drink-driving incident in 2022.

The fire authorities reportedly arrived at Wheesung’s house at 6.29pm after receiving a call for help from his mother and found him unconscious.

His mother, who lives in the same apartment building, had checked in on him after he did not attend a scheduled meeting with his manager earlier in the day, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported on March 10.

The authorities believed that a significant amount of time had passed before his body was found, based on the circumstances at the scene.

The police said on March 11 they plan to request an autopsy on the body to determine the cause and time of the singer’s death, according to Yonhap. They did not find signs of foul play and are checking if he had left a note.

His agency Tajoy Entertainment expressed its “deepest condolences and profound sorrow”.

Wheesung, who debuted in 2002 with studio album Like A Movie, made a name for himself as a ballad and R&B singer with hits such as Insomnia (2009) and Even Thought Of Marriage (2010).

Wheesung, whose full name is Choi Whee-sung, came under fire after he was indicted on charges of illegally using propofol – a powerful anaesthetic – in 2020. He was sentenced to one year in prison, which was suspended for two years, in his appellate trial in 2021.

Wheesung was scheduled to hold a concert alongside another ballad singer, KCM, at the Exco auditorium in Daegu city on March 15. The show has since been cancelled. REUTERS, THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
