LOS ANGELES – Robert De Niro has become a father again at the age of 79, the Oscar-winning American actor said in a recent interview.
He corrected an interviewer who suggested he had only six children, telling her it is now “seven, actually”.
“I just had a baby,” he told ET Canada, without revealing the baby’s gender or the identity of the mother.
De Niro’s publicist confirmed the news to AFP.
The almost-octogenarian already shares two children with his first wife, Taxi Driver (1976) co-star Diahnne Abbott, and two more with socialite Grace Hightower, from whom he separated in 2018.
He also has twin sons with model Toukie Smith, whom he dated in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
De Niro is promoting his new comedy film About My Father, which opens in Singapore cinemas on May 25, and spoke to ExtraTV about becoming a father again at the movie’s New York premiere on Tuesday.
“I’m okay with it. I’m good with it,” he said, adding that it “never gets easier”.
De Niro’s About My Father co-star Kim Cattrall told ExtraTV that he welcomed the latest addition to his family with his rumoured girlfriend, martial arts instructor Tiffany Chen.
“God bless him, his significant other,” said the former star of television series Sex And The City (1998 to 2004). “Tiffany is such a beautiful woman. She came to the set once with her family and watched filming, and she was gorgeous and sweet. I’m happy for both of them.”
Notable celebrities who became fathers again later in life include film-maker George Lucas, at 69; and actor-comedian Charlie Chaplin and singer Mick Jagger, both at 73. AFP
