MELBOURNE - Pointing the car's nose down an empty stretch of country in Victoria, I twitch my right foot and the electric BMW I am piloting rockets forward.

As I grip the thick steering wheel, my body is acutely aware of how fast we are going, but the quietness in the cabin means the speed does not come into stark focus like in a fuel-powered car, where engine revs build progressively.
