SYDNEY – Handrails are an unlikely cause of public controversy. Yet in Sydney, debate is now blazing around the planned installation of the metallic bars intended to help the elderly and people with disabilities ascend a set of stairs to Sydney Opera House’s entrance.

That sounds petty, but then again, this is one of the world’s most iconic staircases, and the outcry is driven by a desire to protect Sydney’s greatest landmark.
