SINGAPORE - When Penang's capital of George Town was inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List in 2008, together with Melaka, the world's attention was suddenly focused on the history and culture of these dazzling port cities east of the Suez Canal.
Unesco said the heritage sites represent an architectural and cultural showcase "without parallel anywhere in East and South-east Asia".
