Less guesswork, cleaner washes: How AI and smart sensing make laundry day easier

Freshly laundered clothes may smell clean, but how often do we think about the appliance doing the washing?

Over time, detergent residue, lint and moisture can collect in places such as the door gasket of the machine and inside the tub. Left unattended, this buildup can contribute to mould and unpleasant odours, even when clothes coming out of the machine seem perfectly clean.

Wiping the gasket, running a separate cleaning cycle and drying the tub are not difficult tasks. The challenge is remembering to do them amid work, errands and everything else that fills the day.

In newer washing machines, routine maintenance like this can be easily taken care of.

Panasonic’s D Series washing machines under its CARE+ Edition, for example, come with a set of Auto Clean features aimed at parts of the machine that are often overlooked.

Auto Gasket Clean uses jet sprays to help remove the lint and detergent residue from around the gasket, while Auto Tub Clean helps clear residue from regular wash cycles. On D Series washer-dryers, Auto Tub Dry also dries the tub after a wash.

These features are just an example of how washing machines are becoming less about simply cleaning clothes and more about how they can fit into the rhythms of everyday life. Panasonic’s D Series CARE+ Edition, which spans eight washers and washer-dryers, also introduces programmes that take some of the guesswork out of everyday washing.

Different clothes, different needs

Not every basket of laundry needs the same treatment.

Delicate garments may need gentler handling, while bedsheets and towels call for a more thorough wash. Then there are school uniforms, sportswear and children’s clothes, which is dirtied by sweat, food spills and stubborn stains.

For delicate fabrics where hygiene is a priority, Panasonic’s Blue Ag+ technology uses a combination of UV light and silver ions during the wash to provide an antibacterial wash without relying on hot water.

When a more thorough wash is needed, the Allergy Steam programme uses a 60 deg C steam to penetrate fabric fibres, eliminating 99.99 per cent of bacteria while removing 99 per cent of allergens like dust mites and pollen.

Stains present a different challenge altogether, especially in homes with young children or anyone who has ever eaten spicy noodles in a white shirt.

The StainMaster+ function includes a 40 deg C programme for common problem areas, such as collars and sleeves, and stains caused by oily sauces and mud.

For clothes that are not quite dirty

Some clothes pose a more familiar dilemma. Perhaps you wore a shirt out to dinner for only a few hours. There are no visible stains, but it has picked up the faint smell of food and a few creases along the way.

Putting it straight back into the wardrobe does not feel right. But neither does running an entire wash for something that was worn only briefly.

Panasonic’s Steam Refresh programme for D Series washer-dryer is designed for such “in-between” clothes.

Instead of a complete wash, it runs a 15-minute steam cycle followed by 22 minutes of gentle drying to help reduce wrinkles and odours. Each load can be up to 2kg, about three full outfits.

The programme doesn’t just offer a practical middle ground for clothes that are not quite dirty, it also helps avoid an unnecessary wash, reducing the water, detergent and time needed to care for just a handful of outfits.

Taking the guesswork out of laundry

Beyond deciding whether clothes need a full wash, there are plenty of other small calls that need to be made when it comes to laundry.

How long should the wash cycle run for? Is there enough detergent? Is the machine too full? Will the clothes be dry by the end of the cycle?

Increasingly, smart washing machines are taking on some of that decision-making.

Panasonic’s AI Smart Wash uses sensors to detect factors such as the size and weight of the laundry load, then adjusts the amount of water and washing duration accordingly.

On the DW Series washer and washer-dryer, AutoDose goes a step further by determining and dispensing the appropriate amount of detergent and softener, so there is no need to measure them out for every load.

Then there is the Optimal Dry function (only available on the D Series washer-dryer), which uses sensors to monitor the moisture level and temperature of clothes, automatically adjusting the drying process to balance drying time with fabric care.

Some of the tasks can also be managed without having to be in front of the machine. On DW Series CARE+ Edition models with wireless connectivity, the MyPanasonic+ app lets users save personalised settings, check how much time remains in a cycle and receive a notification once their laundry is done. It also allows the intended finish time to be set beforehand, while providing troubleshooting information should an error occur.

Choosing a washing machine that suits your household

Buying a washing machine is often a long-term investment, so the best model is not necessarily the one with the longest list of features. It is the one that fits your schedule and lifestyle.

A larger family may prioritise capacity, while smaller homes may place greater importance on dimensions and whether a washer-dryer can replace two separate appliances. Others may focus on water-efficiency ratings, spin speeds or programmes designed for delicate fabrics, sportswear or everyday clothing.

As washing machines become more sophisticated, the aim is not simply to give users more options. Instead, they are being designed to make laundry routines more intuitive, efficient and better suited to the varying needs of modern households.
