SINGAPORE – It is one week till Halloween and the creepy crawlies at home-grown ice cream chain Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee are, for once, actually edible.
No, these are not gummies or chocolates. They are dried mealworms and crickets from Insectyumz by local company Insect Food, an importer and supplier of insect food approved for human consumption.
For a limited period, Creamier is offering these insects as optional toppings ($1.50 each) to pair with its ice cream flavours ($4.90 to $6.50 a scoop).
Somehow, I find it less alarming to know that the insects come as a topping and are not incorporated into the ice cream itself.
Sure, it might be easier to eat the ice cream if I don’t see the insect as a whole, but then I don’t end up wasting a precious scoop of ice cream if I do not like it.
And if the “original flavour” of dried mealworms scares you, go for the less intimidating pre-flavoured cheese crickets or salted egg crickets.
View them as salted protein chips, get over the initial shock, and let the crunch and flavours set in instead.
The insects are best paired with ice creams that have a nuttier flavour profile, such as the Halloween special Charcoal Black Sesame and signature Roasted Pistachio. For the purists, Plain Ole Chocolate ice cream works too.
As consuming insects slowly becomes mainstream, I believe more people will accept insects as treats instead of tricks.
