SINGAPORE – In the midst of planning The Straits Times’ Christmas food features, an old favourite has resurfaced – Bluespoon.

It used to be a casual cafe serving Western and Asian food in locations such as Ghim Moh, Holland and Joo Chiat from 2002 to 2013, and it converted to a home-based business in 2020.

I did not try the food then, but some of my colleagues remember it fondly.

Not only is the food still good, but a major plus point for me is that it is also very convenient.

The current Christmas menu offers three items – beef cheek, chicken goulash and its signature shepherd’s pie. They are sold frozen and simply require defrosting and heating in the microwave or oven or on the stove-top.

The tender grass-fed New Zealand beef cheek ($59.90, good for four people) is braised whole with Malbec red wine, Italian tomatoes, marmalade and aromatics. The magic ingredient is dark chocolate, which enhances the rich flavour of the thick gravy. It is topped with cranberries for a tangy touch and served with roasted Australian pumpkin.

Non-beef eaters can go for the chicken goulash with roasted mini peppers ($49.90, good for four people). The fragrant stew is made with sweet and smoked paprika, caraway seeds, sweet onions, red and yellow capsicum, chicken stock and cider vinegar.

Four whole boneless chicken legs and button mushrooms are cooked in the stew, soaking up the lovely sweet and sour flavours. The finishing touch is sour cream.

Non-beef eaters can go for the chicken goulash with roasted mini peppers.

For both dishes, you will want to prepare extra carbs to soak up the gravy.

The shepherd’s pie – available year-round – comes with a choice of beef or chicken filling stewed in gravy and topped with mashed US russet potatoes. It is priced at $36 (1.2kg, good for four people) or $90 (3kg, good for 10 people).

Following this Christmas menu, the dishes will change again, so stay tuned for more fuss-free options.
