Who: Singaporean singer and songwriter Shazza. The 23-year-old is among the acts performing at music festival Cloud 9 at Arena @ Expo on Feb 15, along with Canadian pop singer Elijah Woods, South Korean rapper B.I, Malaysian girl group Dolla and home-grown rapper Alyph.
Shazza made her debut in 2020 with the single August. In 2023, she released her debut album Chapter One, which includes the single Right Person, Wrong Time. One of her most popular songs, it has clocked more than 2.2 million streams on Spotify.
She recently released Perfume, the first single off her upcoming sophomore album.
The singer, whose real name is Shareefa Aminah, was the recipient of Malay-language daily Berita Harian’s Young Achiever of the Year – an award that recognises the achievements of individuals aged 30 and below – in 2023.
“A perfect weekend for me would start with waking on Saturday around 10.30am – not too late, not too early – and being greeted by my darling Abyssinian tabby cat Rayyan.
After lazing in bed with him for a bit, I would get up and make my bed – very important for me when it comes to starting my day right, even on the weekend. I will join my family for one of my favourite breakfasts, which is either thosai or a lovely tomato-potato frittata cooked by my favourite chef, also known as my mum. We’d eat in front of the TV as we catch up on films and shows together.
My family and I would step out of the house for some shopping and lunch in town. My favourite mall in Singapore is Plaza Singapura, so that would be an ideal spot.
We’d head home after that to have my cousins over for a fun evening hang filled with intense rounds of (football video game) Fifa, general merrymaking and supper. My cousins live a stone’s throw away and we always find time to chill together on the weekends.
Sunday would start the same way, but I would settle in for some creative time after breakfast, whether it’s writing a song, making jewellery or painting. I enjoy crafting very much, but I don’t have a lot of time for it these days, so my perfect weekend would definitely allow me some space for crafting.
After that, I’d get dressed up and head to town to find some friends for dinner and a gig or two, perhaps at the Esplanade.
I’d cap the night off with an ice-cream supper at my favourite late-night ice-cream shop, After Hours, in West Coast before heading home and taking a long shower. I might catch an episode of whatever show I am on at the moment before hitting the hay with a full heart.
My perfect weekend isn’t anything crazy. I just relish spending quality time with my loved ones and being able to be with myself intentionally too.
Life moves very fast. These slower weekends teach me to take everything in and cherish the little things before they’re gone. I try to remember that I’m living through what might end up being some of my most treasured memories in the years to come – all I can do is savour it while it lasts.”
