PARIS – Former French screen icon Brigitte Bardot was briefly hospitalised for an operation, but is back home and convalescing, her office told AFP in a statement on Oct 17.
The health of the 91-year-old, who lives in Saint-Tropez in the south of France, had been the subject of persistent rumours in recent days.
The former actress spent a few days at the private Saint-Jean Hospital in Toulon “to undergo a minor surgical procedure that went particularly well”, her office said.
“She is now resting at home, will not respond to any requests and would thank everyone to respect her privacy and peace,” it added.
The film legend also wished to “thank everyone who is concerned about her health and to reassure them”.
Bardot became world-famous in the 1950s and 1960s for her free-spirited performances in movies such as And God Created Woman (1956) and The Truth (1960).
As a singer, she also released several records during that time, such as Brigitte Bardot Sings (1963) and B.B. (1964).
Bardot stopped acting at the height of her fame in 1973 and permanently moved to the French Riviera town of Saint-Tropez. She dedicated herself to animal welfare through a foundation in her name.
Ahead of her 90th birthday in September 2024, the former actress told AFP that she lived in “silent solitude”, surrounded by nature and content to be “fleeing humanity”.
Bardot has been married to her fourth husband Bernard d’Ormale since 1992. She has a son, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, 65, from her second marriage to French actor Jacques Charrier, who died on Sept 3 at age 88. AFP, REUTERS
