LOS ANGELES – It dawned on Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes recently that all his films feature dysfunctional families.
Says the English film-maker, whose comedy-drama American Beauty (1999) took home five Academy Awards, including for Best Director: “If you look at any of the movies I’ve made, there are no functional families in any of them, really. That wasn’t deliberate.”
