SINGAPORE – Classical music fans are in for a treat. Famed Chinese pianist Li Yundi will be coming to Singapore for a solo concert at the Esplanade Theatre on Oct 11.
The concert is part of the 41-year-old musician’s Mozart Sonata tour, with a programme comprising entirely of pieces by Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Li performed at several prestigious venues during the European leg of the tour from March to May. They include Vienna’s Wiener Musikverein, also known as the Golden Hall, Munich’s Isar Philharmonic Hall and Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris.
Prices for the tickets to his show here are from $88 to $288 and available via Sistic. Those who buy by Sept 8 can receive an early-bird discount of 10 per cent.
The Chongqing-born Li, who was at one time known as China’s “Piano Prince”, rose to fame at the age of 18 when he became the youngest person and the first Chinese to win the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2000.
But he fell from grace in 2021 when news broke that he had been detained in China for allegedly soliciting a prostitute.
Li was then seemingly blacklisted. His appearances as a contestant in the first season of popular Chinese reality competition Call Me By Fire (2021 to present) were digitally removed. The Chinese Musicians’ Association also swiftly cancelled his membership.
He disappeared from public life for about two years, but made his comeback in 2023 with four solo recitals of Mozart sonatas in Australia.
In April, he released his first album in five years, Mozart: The Sonata Project – Salzburg.
