Discover Singapore Art
Explore some of the masterpieces by the pioneer painters of the Nanyang school of art belonging to the National Collection and hanging in the National Gallery Singapore.
A sample that measures just 0.08mm in width was lifted from Nanyang pioneer painter Cheong Soo Pieng’s A Corner Of Art Studio.
It is one of the exhibits at the National Gallery Singapore’s ongoing exhibition, Cheong Soo Pieng: Layer By Layer, which looks at the artist’s works through the lens of science and material analysis. The exhibition is on till Sept 29.
Conservator Diana Tay took this sample from the work using a medical scalpel, with the permission of the painting’s owner. Dr Tay, founder of Barc (Beneath Art Research and Conservation) Labs acknowledges that people tend to worry when the idea of taking samples is floated and credits the owner for his generosity in sharing multiple artworks for analysis.
