SINGAPORE – The launch in late July of a row of five terraced houses in Kampong Java Road as a sandbox for artists is in many ways an experiment for the Government.

Once used as accommodation for government employees in the 1930s and then as the offices for the Singapore City Council in the 1950s, the heritage houses of 52 to 56 Kampong Java were still being leased out for private residential use in the 2000s.
