President’s Challenge Art Exhibition 2024

Art lovers can snag masterpieces at a discounted price and also do their bit for charity at the inaugural President’s Challenge Art Exhibition 2024, which opens on July 25.

Participating artists include Cultural Medallion recipients Iskandar Jalil and Chng Seok Tin, second-generation Nanyang artists Low Hai Hong and Leo Hee Tong, as well as M. Razali Mahat and Abu Jalal Sarimon.

A total of 60 works, ranging from oil paintings to Chinese calligraphy to sculptures, from 60 Singaporean artists will be available for sale.

Prices start at $300 and go up to $65,000, discounted by 50 per cent from their original retail prices.

Half the exhibition’s proceeds will go to the President’s Challenge, which was initiated by former President SR Nathan in 2000 to bring intersectional groups together to help the less fortunate.

ARTualize gallery founder Low Sok Leng, who organised this first art exhibition for the President’s Challenge charity drive, decided to offer works at a discount to encourage support for charity and to ensure more Singaporeans can afford the works.

“We hope to raise $50,000 or sell 80 per cent of the artworks,” she says, adding that she hopes the exhibition will become an annual event.

Cramped Spaces

Colour Day is one of 10 oil paintings in Rajesh P. Kargutkar’s solo exhibition with The Culture Story in Singapore.

Mumbai artist Rajesh P. Kargutkar returns to Singapore for a solo exhibition titled Cramped Spaces at The Culture Story gallery. With 10 oil paintings and 10 works on paper, he highlights the lived experiences and routines of his subjects.

Exploring the idea of crowded spaces, the artist’s paintings capture snippets of daily life in the Mumbai chawls – dense residential buildings – where he grew up.

From families squeezed into single-room units (kholis) to the bustling shared corridors, the works are colourful depictions of the residents’ lives.

Currently teaching at the International School of Geneva in Switzerland, he previously participated in group shows at The Culture Story and The Luxe Art Museum in Singapore.

He will be at the opening on July 27 from noon to 5pm and at a public viewing event on Aug 3 from 1 to 5pm. To view the works in between and after those dates, e-mail
