Timely to have water rationing exercise

The reminder by Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli is timely ("S'poreans must do more to save water: Masagos"; April 22).

Given the prolonged dry spell in the region and the low water levels in Johor's Linggiu Reservoir, I hope that Environment and Water Resources Ministry will partner various ministries, agencies and organisations to start a water rationing campaign to reiterate this important message to all Singaporeans.

The ministry can also look into partnering the Ministry of Education, Housing Board, People's Association and others to hold a water rationing week, where various schools and housing estates will, in phases, experience a pause in water supply for one to two days. The schools and households involved will have to collect the water allocated for their usage.

It will be good for the younger generation to experience water rationing as they will realise the seriousness of not having enough water. At the same time, the exercise can be used as a form of civil defence training for Singaporeans.
