The 50th anniversary of the Safti Military Institute is a milestone in our defence capability ("Safti plays key role in Singapore's security: PM"; June 27).

The jubilee anniversary celebration also serves as a reminder to all of us that we must ourselves defend our country, as no one is responsible for our security and well-being.

We must not take security for granted and must ensure we have a strong Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Our island-state is highly vulnerable to terrorist attacks as well as threats from less friendly neighbours.

We must be fully prepared for any eventuality in this uncertain world, and with a determined and dedicated SAF, together with strong public support, we can overcome any challenge.

It is not by chance that Singaporeans have enjoyed peace and security for more than 50 years; it is our formidable defence capability which keeps us safe and unharmed.
