The Rio 2016 Olympics will go down in history as a huge step forward for Singapore ("Historic moment for Schooling, historic moment for Singapore"; Aug 14).

When I witnessed Joseph Schooling winning the gold medal emphatically, it dawned upon me that Singapore can truly achieve anything.

Singapore has had many world's firsts, but Schooling's Olympic achievement is hands down the most prominent and inspiring.

It was also amazing to see the world champions of 100m butterfly coming together during the medal ceremony to celebrate the fruits of their hard work, showing that the Olympics are not just about winning, but are also a celebration of sportsmanship and the human spirit.

Like many Singaporeans, I believe Schooling's well-deserved Olympic gold medal will not be his last.
