Converting steps to graduated ramps will not help much, especially for wheelchair users who need a caregiver to push them ("Smoothen trek to public transport for seniors" by Mr Tan Kok Tim; Forum Online, Jan 13).
Pushing a wheelchair up a ramp with someone sitting in it is never easy, because of the weight, especially if the caregiver himself is an elderly person. He would need to have enough energy to move up the slope.
Given our ageing population, we often see elderly couples, with one sitting in wheelchair and the other pushing it.
The best solution is to build lifts that can take commuters from street level to the MRT platform.
