Parents must look out for kids on escalators

I was shocked and saddened to read the article "Mum saves son before fatal fall into escalator pit" (July 28).

It is time that everyone learn from such tragedies to prevent them from happening again. This can only be done when all parties exercise their responsibility in observing safety.

Parents must look out for their children.

I was at Funan IT Mall several years ago when I grabbed and pulled a boy who was leaning dangerously over an escalator railing to safety while his parents were chatting with each other.

While it is important that maintenance of all lifts and escalators be carried out effectively to prevent accidents, parents have a role to play in educating their children on the proper way to use such facilities and in reminding them that such facilities are not playgrounds.
