Making car-free plan more comprehensive

Many Singaporeans, tourists and retail businesses will welcome the plan for the Central Business District (CBD) and Civic District to go car-free on selected Sundays ("Parts of CBD and Civic District to try out car-free Sundays" and "Car-free plan 'will open up more recreational space'"; both published on Dec 30, 2015).

I suggest the following measures to make the plan more comprehensive:

- Ensure all public transport systems are reliable, dependable, affordable and efficient.

- Raise parking charges in the CBD to discourage driving. Certificate of entitlement prices and road tax should see a corresponding reduction, with the focus and ultimate aim to make it cheaper to own a vehicle but expensive to drive and park in the CBD.

- Install mist-cooling machines in the CBD car-free zones.
