Letting Parliament appoint president an elitist approach

Letting Parliament elect the president is an elitist approach and we should not transfer people power to Parliament ("Let's talk about policy failures and the elected presidency"; Jan 18).

We should be confident of our electorate.

The last presidential election got messy because the criteria were not stringent enough and allowed sub-par candidates in.

This resulted in votes swinging away from stronger candidates, and in the end, President Tony Tan Keng Yam scraped through without a majority of the votes, even though he was the best candidate.

Let us have more confidence in the electorate.
