Learning from NSF's death

It was heartbreaking to read the latest update on the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) full-time national serviceman (NSF) Kok Yuen Chin who died recently (SCDF to install metal grating over fire station pump wells; May 24).

It is timely of SCDF to install the metal grating. Could this not have been done before the tragic ragging incident?

Why did it take the death of a young man for SCDF to implement measures to prevent such incidents from happening?

Preventive measures should always be a priority whenever there are possibilities of dangerous incidents occurring.

It is a sad and tough lesson learnt. Going forward, I urge the Singapore Armed Forces, the SCDF and all the other authorities to be more proactive in implementing preventive measures.
