It is heartening to read about how abuse against police officers will not be condoned (Violence against police officers not tolerated; Sept 28).
I do feel strongly that there is insufficient deterrence against such abuses.
Presently, such cases of abuse or attacks against police officers attract only a short jail sentence, which is a slap on the wrist for most offenders.
I think mandatory caning should be imposed to reflect the gravity of such abuses.
Our police officers should be given adequate backing and protection by the law so that they can carry out their work effectively.
If the offence of vandalism is viewed by the law as serious enough to attract the penalty of caning, I do not see why attacks against the men-in-blue should be seen as a lesser evil.
The increase in such abuses warrants a serious review of existing penalties.
