Install more solar panels

Singapore is blessed with an abundance of sunshine throughout the year.

The moves reported in the article "Big boost for solar power" (June 6) are steps in the right direction that put the sunshine to good use.

As stated in the article, having solar panels installed at the roof-tops of our Housing Board blocks can help to power the lights in common areas and even lifts, leading to the benefit of reducing the over-reliance on electricity and, in turn, the bills payable.

The authorities could also explore installing solar panels on the road or street lamps across the island - the energy generated can be used to power the lighting during the night.

There will be start-up costs involved in installing the solar panels but the benefits to be reaped in the long term will outweigh the initial costs.
