On Aug 9, The Straits Times carried a supplement on the past 50 National Day parades (NDPs).
Seeing the past parades captured in photos and articles has been quite educational for me, in particular the article and photos from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. I was surprised that he played the euphonium in the combined schools band.
The other articles were all very unique and inspiring. I liked the colourful photos of the Red Lions and the fireworks. It did not occur to me that back in those days, there were no colour televisions, so the only way to see the parade in colour was to go to the parade in person.
The venues of the parades have changed over the years, from the Padang to the Marina Bay floating platform and, this year, to the Sports Hub.
Looking back at 50 years of nation building, I have realised that we have come very far, despite many people thinking that we would not survive.
As a member of the future generation, I will do my part to help Singapore be its best. I hope Singapore will continue to strive against all odds.
