Great nations need the go-getting spirit and hard work

Singapore's social and economic structure is such that the option to stray from the traditional checklist of success is simply not available to the large majority (Throw out checklist of what success is by Mr Lee Teck Chuan; Feb 21).

There is no evidence that the present go-getting lifestyles of Singaporeans are distasteful and unsustainable.

Mr Lee mentioned his encounters with some Americans to support his contention.

I am sure that the United States would not be such a great nation if many Americans were not imbibed with the go-getting spirit, and put in hard work to strive for it.

The same goes for Singapore if it wants to secure its future.
