Good to honour extraordinary Singaporeans

I extend warm congratulations to the deserving recipient of the first Straits Times Singaporean of the Year award, Madam Noriza A. Mansor, who was honoured for her role in helping a stranger ("Good Samaritan is first Straits Times S'porean of the Year"; Feb 3).

She went the extra mile to help clean up an elderly man who had soiled himself. It was an admirable act that showed a heart of compassion.

A special mention also goes out to the other finalists. They hail from different walks of life and have done Singapore proud.

The indomitable human spirit, of putting others before self, will inspire and motivate many others.

It is good that The Straits Times organised this public event, so that those who deserve special honour can be recognised for improving the lives of many people and for standing up for needy and vulnerable people who are unable to speak and fend for themselves.
