Firms fulfil social responsibility in hiring of disabled

While companies operate on the basis of ensuring a healthy bottom line, the hiring of those with mental health issues, the physically disabled or special needs people is one way in which they can choose to give back to society ("Not so simple to hire those with mental illness" by Mr Sum Siew Kee, July 14; and "Help those with mental illness to return to work" by Ms Lee Kay Yan, June 15).

Of course, considerations such as suitability and the skills set of the individuals would have to be considered before engaging them.

While support programmes help prepare those with mental health issues, the physically disabled and special needs people for work, firms also provide training to employees who will become their colleagues.

It would be good to extend such awareness nationwide as Singapore moves towards being a more graceful and inclusive society.
