It's heartwarming to know we are going back to the pleasures of walking and cycling in the heartland ("Ang Mo Kio to be model walking, cycling town"; Dec 4).

The Land Transport Authority's foresight is to be lauded, and I hope that it continues to not only build cycling and walking paths all over Singapore, but also enhance them, so these paths are shady and have "comfort zones".

Here are my suggestions:

- Line the paths with shady and flowering trees.

- Have some rest spots with water coolers, or kiosks selling tidbits and drinks .

- Have sheltered bicycle parking bays. Covered bicycle parking facilities should also be provided at all HDB estates, to protect bikes from the sun, rain and vandalism. Bicycles are now parked along corridors or in void decks haphazardly.
