Don't just depend on school for success

I share Mr Wong Yow Meng's concerns ("End schools' priority for kids of alumni"; last Saturday).

I am a relatively successful serial entrepreneur but I went to a neighbourhood primary school, Corporation Primary, located in Boon Lay.

When I was born, my family lived in a one-room rental flat in Taman Jurong. We later moved to a three-room flat, also in Jurong.

I attended Dunearn Secondary School (Bukit Timah) and, like my primary school, it wasn't a brand-name school, either.

My schools did the best they could for me. I enjoyed and appreciated the time in both schools.

Sure, elite schools may have some opportunities available to students, but at the end of it all, it's up to the children and their parents to make this the best life that they can.

Don't just depend on schools to be successful. If that were the case, I would not be where I am today.
