In any country, there are different groups of residents, ranging from the lower-income groups to the super-rich ("Why subsidise lifestyle choice of eating out?" by Mr Calvin Cheng Ern Lee; Aug 21).
Not everyone has the ability to enjoy a good meal costing more than $5 if they don't want to cook at home.
There are people who are working two jobs or more, and do not have time to cook. Where do these people go to eat? Hawker centres.
Cheap hawker food is a must for students, the elderly, the lower-income group and anyone who wants to save money.
Everyone must eat. Hence, our Government is trying to walk a fine line and balance keeping hawker food cheap and letting hawkers earn a living.
