Candidates, voters have responsibility to Singapore

Voting is serious business, and getting it right is critical.

All we have to do is look around at the pockets of uncertainty and unhappiness to be found in various parts of the globe. This should serve as a stark reminder to us of what is required when going to the polls.

And this applies to both those who stand for election and, especially, those who would vote.

What must remain at the forefront for both parties is the need to serve the country and its people, and for the people to make the right choice in furthering this end.

Voters should look out for candidates who are sincere, and whose message makes sense and comes across as forthright.

What is important now is what can be done to take Singapore to the next level over the next 50 years.

This is where having regard for one another is critical.

But nothing must be taken for granted.

It is likely impossible for a society to make every single one of its citizens completely happy in every single aspect, but we are getting close.

We must not lose sight of how we got here. It took character, drive and determination, to get us this far.

Now, let's see if we can take those attributes and intensify them with our efforts to make this little red and white gem of ours the envy of many a nation out there.
