Zoo can lead in polar bear conservation

Given that global warming is threatening the survival of polar bears, the Singapore Zoo should keep more polar bears to conserve the species.

The tropical climate here has been used as an excuse to keep polar bears in the preserve of colder climates, but Inuka's longevity has proven naysayers wrong ("Photo exhibition marks Inuka's 25th birthday"; yesterday).

In fact, our zoo can teach others - in cold climates as well as in the tropics - how to help polar bears adapt to an equatorial climate.

Having more in captivity will also spread the gene pool.
