Top up SkillsFuture credits annually

I applaud the Government for initiating the SkillsFuture Credit scheme. I applied for a professional diploma course in November and have successfully claimed my $500 credit.

I had presumed that I would get another $500 in my SkillsFuture account this year. However, I was wrong.

It would be ideal if this credit could be topped up annually. If there are budget constraints, perhaps the top up could be paid out annually for another year or two.

Although $500 is not a huge sum, it is significant enough to encourage lifelong learning for Singaporeans who are past middle age, like me.

I foresee a need to learn new skills to prepare myself for the challenges that lie ahead.

With the increased cost of living, it is becoming expensive for people like me to pay for a professional-related course.

Nowadays, having a basic degree does not equate to much. To remain in the workforce, it is imperative that low- to middle-income workers in their 40s and 50s be givenfinancial support beyond a single $500 credit.

I hope the authorities will consider my appeal.
