Thank you, pioneers - proud to be a S'porean

This year, Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence. The country has gone far despite a far from smooth-sailing journey.

Many people had said Singapore would not be able to survive for long after achieving independence. But we did.

The pioneer generation had put their hearts and souls into building up the prosperous nation that Singaporeans proudly call home today. Their goal: A better life.

My grandmother has told me many stories of the tough times she went through - when having a fan was a luxury and when everyone in the family had to scrimp and save so that the children could continue to go to school.

As Singaporeans enjoy the Golden Jubilee celebrations, let's not forget the pioneer generation - parents and grandparents who had worked extremely hard so their offspring could have better lives.

I thank all pioneers for their efforts, as well as those who will carry on those efforts so that Singapore can continue to thrive.

I am extremely grateful for all that I have and am proud to say that I am a Singaporean.
