Teachers play key role in our children's future

Acting Minister for Education (Schools) Ng Chee Meng said that education is a key factor and that teachers play a critical role in shaping the nation's future ("'Critical role for teachers' in shaping nation's future"; yesterday).

I completely agree with this.

Last Friday, I attended a parent-teacher meeting at Bishan Park Secondary to discuss my son's mid-year results.

Each of his subject teachers went through his results in detail with me.

My son, who is in Secondary 4, is an average student who aspires to do well with the help of his teachers - not only on the education front but also in non-examinable areas.

The school offers holistic education to every student, regardless of his background.

The teachers take pride and effort in improving the grades and quality of every student.

Teaching is one of the most important roles in our society. Educators play a crucial role in helping to influence children and shape their lives.

A teacher's role involves more than simply standing in front of a classroom and lecturing.

In fact, even though a teacher spends the majority of the day in the classroom, the actual teaching component is only part of the job.

An effective teacher understands that teaching involves wearing multiple hats to ensure that the school day runs smoothly and that all students receive a quality and holistic education.

We should stress the importance of moving away from being obsessed with grades and focus more on inculcating values that last a lifetime, so that good values are nurtured.

We must equip children with social and emotional competencies to boost their mental well-being, increase their self-confidence and improve academic outcomes.

I am happy to note that our teachers are equipped with the right skills and knowledge to help our students develop good character and good values.

Teachers and quality teaching influence the destiny of every individual.

Teaching is a complex and important profession for which our nation should draw those with the best aptitude and greatest commitment.

With our good education system, I am confident that our children will contribute to shaping our nation's future too.
