Rupee crunch: Visitors did not get change in India

My friends from Singapore who have just returned from India tell an upsetting tale for not just locals but visitors too.

When trying to make purchases in shops, pay for taxi fares or meals, my friends were consistently refused any change, on account of the rupee crunch ("Rupee crunch affects frequent visitors to India" by Mr V. Balu; Nov 22, "Guidance needed on exchanging rupees in S'pore" by Mr Sam Vijaya; Nov 16, and "Scramble as India scraps large banknotes"; Nov 11).

In some cases, they were either forced to pay more or had to forgo the purchase.

I would be grateful to know whether the High Commission of India in Singapore is doing anything to forewarn or assist visitors who are planning trips to India.
