Republic can be trusted partner of world powers

The recent meeting of top leaders from China and Taiwan in Singapore has illuminated the little red dot, as the world watched in awe ("Historic meeting for Xi and Ma in S'pore"; Sunday).

As founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew once said, our survival depends on whether we are relevant to the global community.

The latest development shows that we are, and though we may never be a superpower, we can be a trusted partner to world powers in peacemaking.
